One of the traits that merited David as a man after God’s heart was the fact that he honored his covenant with Jonathan even in the event of his death. David was a man of his word. It didn’t matter that no one else understood why he continued to show kindness to the house of Saul. David kept covenant with Jonathan. What we find today is that once a relationship has parted, secrets spill. Friends turn to arch enemies and loose lips are poised to sink lives. The person after God’s heart maintains their word despite the dissolution of a relationship. They can still be counted upon to uphold their end even if the other person(s) have dropped theirs.
